The Five Elements

Five phases of moving energy — the generating and restraining cycles of life.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing) are not static substances — they are five distinct behaviors of Qi. Each phase generates the next in an infinite cycle: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → back to Wood. Understanding your current phase lets you align your actions with the natural flow rather than fighting it. This page is your map to each phase, with guides to get started.

Water · Shui (水) — Live

Water is the phase of absolute stillness and deep recovery. It is the hidden reserve, the deep well of Jing — your body’s essential battery. When you’re exhausted, burnt out, or running on empty, Water is calling you back to rest.

Wood · Mu (木) — Live

Wood is the energy of growth, expansion, and new beginnings. It mirrors spring and the momentum of a seed breaking through the soil. When you feel stuck or your routines collapse, Wood is the upward push you need.

Doubt isn't the problem. Inertia is. Wood's season is spring, and its whole job is to get things moving again — and you don't need a big push, you need a real one. One seed. One page. One conversation you keep putting off. Start there, let it grow, and don't strangle it: momentum follows direction, not force. When you're stalled, stop asking how do I push harder? and ask what is the smallest true beginning? The tools that serve Wood are in the Wu Xing Tool Matrix.

Fire · Huo (火) — Live

Fire is ascending energy, peak radiance, and full expression. It is the heat of execution, visibility, and creative spark. When your drive is gone and you feel invisible, Fire is waiting to be kindled.

Fire's work is visibility. Something has been building in you — a task, a call, a piece of work nobody has seen — and Fire is what finally brings it out. Do one visible thing today: finish the thing you keep mentioning, make the call, show the work. If your drive is gone, don't try to summon it; warmth doesn't work that way. Start with the smallest act of it — toward the work, or toward another person — and let it catch.

Earth · Tu (土) — Live

Earth is the center — grounding, nourishment, and stabilization. It is the harvest, the meal, the safe foundation. When your body feels heavy or your nourishment is chaotic, Earth offers stability.

Earth is the harvest and the meal and the foundation, and its practice is the quietest of the five: tend what is already yours before reaching for more. Eat one meal slowly. Keep one space in order. Simplify one system you've outgrown. The question Earth keeps asking is plain — what am I holding that needs care? — and it rewards a plain answer. Out on the land, this is soil building and cover crops, Earth made physical

Metal · Jin (金) — Live

Metal is contraction, refinement, and letting go. It is the autumn harvest, the pruning of dead weight, the clarity of boundaries. When your space or finances feel tight, Metal teaches you to cut away what no longer serves.

Metal is the autumn phase, and autumn is honest: things get cut back. The practice is release — drop one commitment, one possession, one habit, one boundary that's too loose. Metal likes edges, which means it likes clarity: keep what earns its place, sharpen what stays, let the rest go. Its question is the shortest of the five — what is finished? — and it expects an answer. The temple's tool work, sharpening and refining, is Metal practice
